12TH ISSCO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2025

BACKGROUNDISSCO, the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas, was established in 1992. Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore, was appointed President and Professor Wang Ling-chi, Department of Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley, Secretary-Treasurer together with a number of regional Board members. ISSCO is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional society of individuals and institutions interested in and committed to the study of Chinese overseas. The primary purposes of the society are to advance research and scholarly exchange in the study of Chinese overseas, to provide means for research and publications, and to organise and support national and international conferences. ISSCO's International conference is a major activity of ISSCO hosted by various academic institutions in different countries. The papers presented at these conferences comprise all academic fields related to the study of the Chinese overseas. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya in collaboration with the International Society for the Study of the Chinese Overseas (ISSCO), is proud to host the 12th ISSCO International Conference 2025, to be held at the Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur on 4-6 November 2025. INTRODUCTION OF THEME The conference will explore the theme of, “Chinese Overseas in a Changing World: Global Networks, Local Realities”.The global diasporic experiences of Chinese overseas communities, spanning their transitions from migrant groups to citizens of their respective countries and subsequent patterns of remigration, have provided rich examples of interconnected global networks. The rise of China and the influx of new migrants in recent decades have further diversified and enriched these experiences. However, as these communities settled into various localities across different historical and cultural contexts, the processes of localization led to distinct and varied trajectories. This conference will explore the dynamic interplay between global networks and local realities, examining how Chinese overseas communities have navigated transnational connections while adapting to the unique socio-political and cultural landscapes of their host societies. The Organizing Committee of the 12th ISSCO International Conference 2025 invites submissions for this upcoming conference. Scholars and researchers across various disciplines are welcome to submit proposals for papers and panels that address the conference’s main theme and sub-themes.Sub-Themes (including but not limited to):Migration and SettlementsIdentityGlobalisation and DeglobalisationResearch Methodology on Chinese OverseasPolitics and Nation-StatesChinese Cultural HeritageChinese Beliefs and ReligionsLanguages and DialectsLiterature and TranslationHybridityBusiness NetworksArchitecture and Urbanisation

ASEAN POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE 2025

As the Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaya celebrates its Silver Jubilee, we find ourselves at a pivotal juncture. Over the past quarter-century, we have built a legacy of excellence, fostering critical thinking, innovation, and transformative design. Yet, the challenges of today demand more than just a continuation of past successes; they require a bold reimagining of the future. Climate crises, rapid urbanization, digital disruptions, socio-political instabilities, and shifting cultural paradigms demand urgent and radical rethinking of how we design, construct, and inhabit our spaces. The prevailing frameworks that have governed architecture, urban planning, and real estate are proving inadequate in the face of escalating global uncertainties. How do we transition from outdated, unsustainable models toward future-proof, resilient, and adaptive built environments? The Great Transition is not just a phase—it is an imperative. It calls for a reconfiguration of spatial practices, material cultures, governance models, and technological applications that underpin contemporary urban life. This transition challenges us to move beyond incremental change and embrace bold, interdisciplinary, and speculative approaches that will shape the next generation of cities, buildings, and landscapes. This conference interrogates the role of the built environment in responding to these urgent transformations. How can cities decarbonize without deepening inequalities? Can digitalization enhance rather than erode urban identities? How should designers and planners address social resilience, energy transitions, and post-pandemic urban shifts in ways that prioritize both human and ecological well-being?As we honor our 25-year journey of excellence, we recognize that legacy alone is not enough. It is time to redefine our role in shaping the next 25 years of built environment research, education, and practice. Bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, APGC 2025 seeks to critically explore the emerging paradigms, design methodologies, and policy innovations required for a built environment that is not just reactive but proactively engaged in shaping the world’s uncertain future. This is the moment to rethink, recalibrate, and radically transform the built environment for a new era.
