BUKIT MERTAJAM, July 1 — A policeman died after his motorcycle crashed into a tyre that is believed to have fallen from a lorry at Kilometre 140.6 of the North-South Expressway northbound near Seberang Jaya early this morning.
Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the 40-year-old victim, who was attached to the Perlis Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), died at the scene from severe head injuries after his motorcycle crashed into the tyre.
He said police received a report at 6 am about the accident involving a car and a motorcycle, where initial investigations revealed that the car, travelling from Juru towards Seberang Jaya, is believed to have struck the tyre in the middle of the road.
“As a result, the car lost control and veered to the left shoulder of the road, while a motorcycle coming from the same direction subsequently hit the tyre, causing the rider to fall and be dragged along the road,” he said in a statement today.
Lim said the car driver and two passengers were injured and sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and they are currently tracking down the lorry’s owner.
Members of the public with information regarding the incident or dashcam footage are urged to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Nor Aliza Fatim Ismail, at 017-4046215 or visit the nearest police station to assist in the investigation. — Bernama
