KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued multiple thunderstorm warnings today, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across several states until this evening.
In its latest 5pm update posted on Facebook, MetMalaysia warned that thunderstorms are expected in Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak and Sabah, with conditions expected to persist until 8pm on Monday, May 25.
The affected areas include Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu in Kedah; Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar in Perak; as well as multiple districts in Pahang including Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera and Pekan.
Other areas under the warning include Hulu Selangor in Selangor; Jelebu and Jempol in Negeri Sembilan; as well as parts of Sarawak and Sabah, including Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit, Miri, and areas within the Interior, West Coast, Tawau and Sandakan divisions.
Earlier in the afternoon, MetMalaysia had issued a separate alert covering a wider area, including Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Johor, alongside several states also listed in the later update.
That earlier warning remains valid until 7pm today and covers Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak, Kelantan, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak, among others.
MetMalaysia said the warnings are issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, either occurring or expected to occur for more than an hour.
It added that thunderstorm alerts are short-term warnings, typically valid for no more than six hours per issuance.
