KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — A Magistrate’s Court in Sungai Petani today rejected a police application to remand a lorry driver involved in a crash that killed six members of the same family in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal, Kedah.
According to national daily Berita Harian, magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri declined the application and ordered the release of the 49-year-old driver after police completed recording his statement at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters.
The driver was detained shortly after the collision, which claimed six lives, including that of a police corporal.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah had earlier said the driver tested negative for drugs.
Checks also found that he held a valid driving licence, while preliminary investigations indicated the lorry was travelling at about 60kph when the crash occurred.
Police said the driver had seven traffic summonses on record, four of which remain outstanding.
Investigators are continuing to examine all aspects of the case to determine the cause of the crash.
It is understood that the Proton X50 carrying the victims had been collected from a dealership in Juru, Penang, only hours before the accident.
Police said the vehicle would be sent to Puspakom for a comprehensive inspection as part of the investigation.
