Blood, sweat and tears — and lost cash: KL police tracing mule accounts in BTS ticket scam probe

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Police are tracing several bank accounts believed to have been used as mule accounts in connection with alleged fraud involving the sale of tickets for BTS’ upcoming concert in Malaysia.

According to Berita Harian, Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said investigations were ongoing and several bank accounts suspected of being involved had already been identified.

“We suspect these accounts were used by the syndicate to receive payments from victims. 

“It is possible that the owners of these bank accounts are mule account holders,” he said to the national daily today.

Hoo said no new police reports had been lodged in relation to the case so far.

South Korean boy band BTS are scheduled to perform in Kuala Lumpur on December 12 and 13 as part of their BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’, with the concerts set to take place at TM Stadium Nasional in Bukit Jalil.

Earlier, police advised the public to remain cautious and avoid purchasing BTS concert tickets from unofficial sources or through so-called agents to prevent falling victim to scams.

Hoo had previously said that, as of June 8, police had received 28 reports from individuals claiming they had been cheated in transactions involving tickets for the concerts.

Media reports had earlier highlighted how tickets for the highly anticipated shows sold out within a short period, creating opportunities for scammers to target fans eager to secure seats for the December performances.

Tickets for the concerts were sold through the organiser’s website at prices ranging from RM338 to RM1,288.
