New PJ hospital site finalised; Selangor MB pledges to expedite approvals for 500-bed facility

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — The site for the long-awaited Petaling Jaya public hospital has been officially confirmed, paving the way for a new 500-bed facility to serve the rapidly growing population of the Petaling district.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced today that the Ministry of Health (MOH) has accepted the proposed location following a high-level coordination meeting on May 14 involving federal, state, and local government agencies.

The new hospital will be built using a “vertical concept,” a design similar to Hospital Ampang that allows for high capacity on a smaller land footprint, which Amirudin said is best for the urban landscape of Petaling Jaya and will help the MOH optimise construction costs.

“The site location accepted by MOH is highly suited to the needs of Petaling Jaya residents, particularly in terms of access, capacity, land cost, and proximity to the local population,” Amirudin said in a statement.

The confirmation marks a significant milestone in efforts to improve healthcare access for the 2.3 million residents of the Petaling District, including over 800,000 people in Petaling Jaya alone.

Currently, residents in the area rely on Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Shah Alam, and the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).

Amirudin highlighted that the State Government has been actively searching for a suitable site since 2018 to alleviate the strain on these existing facilities.

The new hospital is expected to provide much-needed relief for residents in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, and Puchong.

Expediting the process

With the site now confirmed, a joint site visit involving the MOH, the State Economic Planning Unit, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), and the Petaling District Office will be conducted this week.

Amirudin assured that the Selangor government is prepared to fast-track the land administration process to ensure construction begins without delay.

“The Selangor State Government is prepared to facilitate and expedite the land administration process so that the construction... can bring benefits to the residents of the Petaling District,” he added.

The project is part of a wider collaboration between the state and federal governments to address hospital congestion across Selangor.

Amirudin cited the successful completion of Hospital Cyberjaya and Hospital Tanjong Karang in 2022 as precedents.

Additiionally, the 312-bed Hospital Kapar is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, which is expected to further reduce the patient load at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) in Klang and Hospital Shah Alam.
