SONGKHLA, June 29 — The Malaysian Consulate General in Songkhla is urging Malaysians in southern Thailand and those travelling to the province to be on alert, following a heavy to very heavy rain forecast in several areas of the country from June 28 to July 3.

In an advisory on Monday, the consulate said the warning was issued by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) of Thailand.

According to the consulate, the weather condition could trigger flash floods, widespread flooding, forest runoffs, landslides, and rough seas along the Andaman Sea coastline.

“Malaysians in Thailand and those looking to visit the country, especially areas that have been identified as at-risk, are therefore advised to remain vigilant, monitor the latest weather updates, and adhere to instructions and advices issued by Thai authorities from time to time,” it said.

The Malaysian Consulate General also encourages Malaysian citizens to obtain adequate travel insurance before their departures to minimise the risks of losses or disruptions that might arise from unforeseen circumstances while in Thailand.

The consulate also advises the public to refrain from visiting waterfalls, caves, hillsides, rivers, and beaches that have been identified as at-risk, especially in the event the weather deteriorates or local authorities restrict access to the areas.

Malaysian citizens requiring consular assistance may contact the duty officer at the Malaysian Consulate General in Songkhla by calling +66 81-990-1930 or e-mailing mwsongkhla@kln.gov.my.

The Malaysian Consulate General in Songkhla also informed that it would continue to monitor the weather and situational developments in Thailand and convey the latest information as required.

The warning comes as several provinces in southern Thailand are still bracing for unpredictable weather following the monsoon season.

At the end of November and December last year, the Songkhla province, including the city of Hat Yai, was hit by a major flood as a result of prolonged downpours. The flood inundated residential areas and commercial centres, disrupted transportation networks, and caused thousands of residents to be displaced.

The event also affected travels by Malaysians who entered southern Thailand via the land border crossing. — Bernama
